stop 普通用詞,其使用范圍廣泛,可指停止任何行動(dòng)、活動(dòng)或狀態(tài).但需注意 stop
to do sth. 和 stop doing sth. 的區(qū)別.stop to do sth. 指停下來(lái)（為了）去做另
一件事,而stop doing sth. 指停止手中正在做的事.
1）He came to the new building and stoppedsuddenly.
他來(lái)到新大樓前突然停了下來(lái).
2）A police car drew abreast of us and signalled us to stop.
一輛警車(chē)開(kāi)過(guò)來(lái)與我們并排,示意我們停下來(lái).
3）The child was killed when a car failed to stop at the crossing.
汽車(chē)在人行橫道線未能停車(chē),結(jié)果把小孩撞死了.
4） Istopped to read the notices on the bulletin board.
我停了下來(lái)閱讀公告欄上的通告.
5）There is something rather strange about all this if one stops to consider it.

cease 正式用詞,指停止某行動(dòng)或活動(dòng),往往含某事不再存在或完全停止或終止.表示不再做
某事或停止某種狀態(tài),常用 cease to do sth. 表示停止正在做的事,也可說(shuō) cease doing
sth. .
1）The general ordered the troop to cease fire.
將軍命令部隊(duì)停火.
2）Death occurs when vital organs, such as heart or lungs, cease to function.
當(dāng)重要器官如心臟和肺部停止功能死亡就發(fā)生.
3）When pleasure is the business of life, it ceases to be pleasure.
當(dāng)享受成為生活的主要事務(wù)時(shí),它就不再是一種享受.
4）Don't part with your illusions. When they are gone you may still exist, but you have ceased to live.
不要放棄你的幻想.當(dāng)幻想沒(méi)有了以后,你還可以生存,但是你雖生猶死.
5）If we do not confront and overcome these internal fears and doubts, if we
protect ourselves too much, then we cease to grow. We become trapped inside

動(dòng).可用作動(dòng)詞和名詞.
1）The officer halted his troops for a rest.
軍官下令部隊(duì)停止前進(jìn)休息一下.
2）Work was halted when the machine broke down.
機(jī)器出故障時(shí),工作停了下來(lái).
3）She held her hand out flat, to halt him.
她平伸出一只手掌,要擋住他.
4）They criticised the government for failing to halt economic decline.
他他批評(píng)政府未能遏止經(jīng)濟(jì)下滑.
5）Preserving the atmosphere, by both protecting the ozone layer and haltingthe greenhouse effect, is an environmental necessity.

pause 指暫時(shí)的、瞬間的中途停止,然而還會(huì)繼續(xù)進(jìn)行.可用作動(dòng)詞和名詞.

2）She paused a moment before going on with the story.
她停了一會(huì)兒,接著繼續(xù)講這個(gè)故事.

quit 可表示停止某事,相當(dāng)于stop, cease 或 discontinue 的意思；也可表示“放
棄”、“離開(kāi)”或“退出”的意思.
1）She quit what she was doing tohelp me paint the house.
她停下手中的活來(lái)幫我粉刷房子.
2）Quit acting like you didn't know.
別裝得像你不知道似的.
3）He decided to quit smoking for the sake of health.
為了健康起見(jiàn),他決定戒煙.
4）Owing to the falling health, Mr. Smith had to quithis job.
由于健康狀況下降,史密斯先生不得不辭職.
5）Steve quit when he realized that he could not win.

suspend=“中”斷,“中”止,有點(diǎn)推遲的味道,之后還可以繼續(xù).譬如你有張健身卡,會(huì)員期為一年,你中間有事不能去,你可以去和gym的人說(shuō)你要從6月份開(kāi)始suspend你的會(huì)員期直到8月,8月回去之后還可以繼續(xù)
halt=很突然地停止,是“終”止,譬如說(shuō)急剎車(chē)
cease=慢慢停止（永久性停止）,譬如說(shuō)cease out,滅絕,絕跡
cease :v.終止,停止,主要指停止已存在的一種狀態(tài)或行為,多用于書(shū)面語(yǔ).如：
The animal has ceased to exist. 這種動(dòng)物已經(jīng)不復(fù)存在了.
halt :v.使終止,停止.如：
The soldiers halted for a short rest. 士兵停下休息一會(huì)兒.
stop: v阻止,使中斷,主要用來(lái)指停止正在進(jìn)行的動(dòng)作或行為,要注意后跟不定式及動(dòng)名詞的不同[不定式表示還未做的事；動(dòng)名詞表示已經(jīng)做的事].如：
He stopped to talk with me .他停下來(lái)跟我說(shuō)話.
He stopped talking.他停止說(shuō)話.
suspend 一般做懸掛解釋用,很少用停止用,只有在一些專(zhuān)業(yè)術(shù)語(yǔ)里用到停止這個(gè)解釋
stop是很普遍的用詞,比較通用化

halt 是暫停前進(jìn)
stop 是終止,停止
cease感覺(jué)很正式,用在戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)停火什么表達(dá)中,或者在一些文學(xué)中也常用到.
end和stop當(dāng)然也不同,end表示徹底結(jié)束了,但stop就表示停下來(lái),感覺(jué)沒(méi)end那么徹底.當(dāng)然.還要結(jié)合上下文和具體句型以及介詞的搭配.
endless和ceaseless也差不多,但ceaseless極為正式,有點(diǎn)bookish的感覺(jué).
discontinue終止,中斷,中止
The bus service was discontinued because nobody used it.
那條公交線因沒(méi)有乘客而停止?fàn)I運(yùn).
suspend暫停,終止
Both sides in the conflict have agreed temporarily to suspend hostilities.
沖突雙方同意暫時(shí)停火.
